Donde Te Fuiste

BY STEPHEN WAYNE MALLETT

CONCEPT

Donde Te Fuiste" is a tender visual journey of love, memory, and legacy. Through vivid flashbacks evoked by treasured polaroids, Ava Caceres honors her late grandfather’s life while performing in a serene, emotional space. Each memory builds a mosaic of joy, resilience, and family, culminating in a heartfelt tribute at his resting place.

Intro:
The video opens with Ava standing in soft sunlight, framed by towering trees and a boundless blue sky. Her voice carries a quiet intensity as she clutches a stack of old polaroids, each one a doorway into cherished memories. She studies the first, her fingers tracing its edges, and the camera pushes in until the image consumes the frame.

Polaroid 1: The Baseball Game
The scene bursts to life with the crack of a bat against a ball. Dust rises in golden clouds from a well-worn diamond as young men shout and laugh, their voices blending with the rustle of leaves in the warm breeze. The grass is patchy, the bases nothing more than scraps of cloth, but their energy fills the space with an electric vibrancy.

Ava’s grandfather, his boyish grin framed by the shadow of a wide-brimmed cap, stands at third base, knees bent, ready to steal home. Sweat glistens on his brow, his shirt clinging to his back as the sun beats down. He calls to his teammates, a mix of teasing and encouragement, before darting toward the plate in a cloud of dirt.

As he slides home, laughter erupts around him, the joy of the moment painting their faces with unfiltered happiness. Dusting himself off, he looks to the edge of the field, where a small group of onlookers has gathered. Among them is a young woman, her eyes wide with quiet curiosity. She adjusts her hair, tucking it behind her ear, as her lips curl into a soft smile.

The moment lingers, suspended in time, before the scene dissolves back into Ava’s world. She sings softly, her voice now tinged with a deeper emotion, and turns the polaroid over, gazing at the next.

Polaroid 2: A Love in Bloom
The camera fades into a new memory: a quiet park where Ava’s grandfather sits beside his future wife on a weathered wooden bench. Birds chirp faintly, the wind carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine. Their hands brush as they pass a bag of peanuts to feed the squirrels, and their laughter fills the air, unhurried and pure.

The scene transitions to an evening glow, the couple stepping into a vibrant nightclub in the heart of the 1980s. The air pulses with the beat of disco music as swirling neon lights cast playful shadows across the room. Her grandfather, dressed sharply in a suit with his hair neatly combed, spins his partner under his arm. She twirls, her sequined dress catching the light like tiny fireworks. Their smiles are magnetic, their connection undeniable, as the world around them blurs into insignificance.

The camera pulls back to Ava’s performance again. Her voice swells, her expression a mix of admiration and loss. She flips to the next polaroid.

Polaroid 3: A Journey of Hope
This image blooms into motion as we see Ava’s grandparents standing beneath a sprawling sky, streaked with contrails of airplanes above. The hum of engines fades into the clatter of wheels on pavement as the couple navigates a bustling airport. Her grandmother clutches a leather suitcase while her grandfather, with his hand on the small of her back, holds a passport stamped with promise.

The camera drifts to their feet, stepping onto American soil for the first time. Their shoes scuff against the pavement as they exchange a glance—equal parts excitement and trepidation. The scene continues with glimpses of their early life in this new world: a modest apartment filled with mismatched furniture, their first small Christmas tree adorned with paper ornaments, the pride in their faces as they hang mini Cuban and an American flags on the tree.

Back in the present:
Ava’s performance reaches its crescendo. The camera pulls back, revealing her grandfather’s mausoleum. The space is quiet and reverent, the sunlight dappling the marble as Ava kneels to place the polaroids alongside a bouquet of fresh flowers. She lingers for a moment, her fingers brushing the edge of the stone, before standing next to her grandmother sing her final notes.

The video fades to white—a tribute to life, love, and the memories that endure beyond time.
